A warm welcome to the land of hospitality
When you first arrive in Montenegro, you are often struck by not only the beautiful nature, but also the friendliness of the people. Although Montenegrins are known as proud and independent people, they are at the same time very hospitable. Visitors are often welcomed with a smile and it is not unusual for a conversation to spontaneously lead to an invitation for a cup of coffee or a glass of local wine.
Hospitality is deeply rooted in Montenegrin culture. Family, friends and neighbors play an important role in daily life. Eating together, having long conversations and enjoying each other's company are natural. That is precisely why many tourists quickly feel at home here.
A country of different cultures
Despite its relatively small surface area, Montenegro has a surprisingly diverse population. Over the centuries, different peoples have lived here together, creating a rich mix of traditions, languages and religions.
The majority of residents speak Montenegrin, a language very similar to Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian. In tourist areas, many people also speak good English and often also German or Russian. This makes it easy for you as a visitor to make yourself understood.
This cultural diversity is reflected everywhere: in the cuisine, architecture, music, religious buildings and local customs. That is precisely what makes a trip through Montenegro so interesting.
Life moves at a different pace
Those who are used to the busy life in Northwestern Europe will notice that the atmosphere in Montenegro is much more relaxed. People take the time for each other. A cup of coffee can take an hour and a dinner with family or friends often extends late into the evening.
That doesn't mean people are lazy; above all, it means that enjoying life here is at least as important as working. This relaxed rhythm is one of the greatest charms of Montenegro for many holidaymakers.
Traditions that are still alive
Although Montenegro is developing rapidly, traditions are still cherished. During religious holidays, village festivals and family gatherings, some residents still wear traditional clothing and age-old recipes and customs are honored.
Music also plays an important role. At festivals and local events you regularly hear traditional Balkan music, where singing, guitar and folk instruments come together. Dancing and music are a natural part of many festive occasions.
Love for food
Montenegrins are proud of their cuisine. Many products come directly from our own garden or from local farmers. Fresh fish, olive oil, cheese, grilled meat, vegetables and homemade wine form the basis of many dishes.
Eating out is also a social activity. Meals are eaten quietly and there is always time for a good conversation. You will also notice this as a visitor: in many restaurants you will receive personal help and an explanation about the dishes.
Respect for visitors
Tourism is an important sector for Montenegro and visitors are generally treated with great respect. Whether you visit a beach bar, take a taxi or do some shopping, the atmosphere is usually relaxed and friendly.
A few words in the local language, such as "Dobar dan" (good day), "Hvala" (thank you) or "Molim" (please), are always appreciated and often immediately bring a smile.
