Practical tips

Money, internet, drinking water, documents, transport, renting a car, supermarkets, children and pets.

Money & Payments in Montenegro

Although Montenegro is not a member of the European Union, you can pay here with the euro (€). That makes traveling easy: you don't have to exchange money and you immediately know what something costs.

In most hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and shops you can pay with a debit or credit card. Still, it's wise to always have some cash on you, especially if you visit a local market, take a taxi or eat at a small family business.

There are ATMs in almost every city where you can withdraw euros. Check in advance whether your bank charges fees for debit card payments abroad.

Tip: Always take a small amount of cash with you for beach beds, local markets or smaller cafes.

Did you know? Montenegro is one of the few countries in the world that uses the euro without being an official member of the eurozone.

Internet & SIM cards

Staying online during your holiday is easy in Montenegro. Mobile coverage along the coast is excellent and you also have good range in most mountain areas.

You can easily buy a prepaid SIM card in stores of local providers. You usually only need a valid passport or identity card for this. Almost all hotels, apartments, restaurants and cafes offer free WiFi.

With a local SIM card you often have tens of gigabytes of mobile internet at an attractive rate. 5G coverage is continuously being expanded, especially in larger cities and along the coast.

Drinking water

A question many travelers ask is: can you drink the tap water?

In most of Montenegro, tap water is safe and of good quality. In cities such as Bar, Budva, Kotor and Podgorica, many residents simply drink water from the tap.

During extremely hot periods or in remote mountain areas, some people prefer to opt for bottled water. It is widely available and relatively cheap. The natural mountain springs are also known for their clear and fresh water.

Local holidays

Montenegro has religious, national and cultural holidays all year round. Particularly in the summer, festivals, concerts and events are regularly organized in coastal towns.

In addition, almost every coastal town organizes its own summer festivals with music, dance, food and fireworks.

Montenegro is easy to visit for travelers from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. A valid passport or identity card is sufficient for a tourist stay within the permitted duration of stay. Always check the most current travel conditions with the government of your own country before departure.

Are you traveling by car? Please also bring your driver's license, registration certificate and insurance papers.

Public transport

Montenegro has an extensive network of buses that connect almost all larger cities. Trains mainly run between Bar and Podgorica and further north. This route is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in Europe.

The roads are generally well maintained. In mountain areas, keep narrow, winding roads in mind and take your time to enjoy the beautiful views.

Tip: book in advance during the high season so that you have a choice of different cars.

Gas stations are widely available along the coast and in the larger cities. At many gas stations you can simply pay with a debit or credit card.
